By Dave Graybill

Well, I finally found the time to get back down to Rocky Ford Creek, near Ephrata, with my fly rod. I really picked a great day, too. When I arrived in the early afternoon it was sunny and clear and there was no wind to speak of. I decided to go back to my tried and true method of casting a Mini Leech and Scud on an intermediate sinking line, and it really paid off. I had a fish on my second cast, and in two hours had hooked ten nice trout. I lost some of them and got broken off twice. I fished another hour and got three more good fish. I was fishing below the first parking lot and worked my way down to almost the middle lot. Casting this set up in the reeds below the Handicapped dock is a real challenge, but if you can get to the water without getting wet it pays off. The heavy weeds I dealt with here earlier are all gone now. The trout ranged in size from 12 to 20 inches, and I know there are much larger fish in the Ford that I missed. If you have tried fishing the Ford, this would be a good year and right now a good time to do it.
