By Dave Graybill

The opening day of summer-run salmon and sockeye fishing was perfect for anglers in Central Washington. The skies were clear, the wind was down and fish were biting. I have fished with Shane Magnuson most opening days for many years, and this time we started the season at Chelan Falls. There was a big fleet there and we saw many boats land fish. The morning bite wasn’t that hot, but we didn’t mind. We had the Kelley family on board, including Kyle, Angela and Audrey, and they prepared biscuits and gravy right on the boat! It wasn’t long after breakfast that Magnuson made a minor adjustment to our Super Baits, and we got busy. We got four nice kings, ranging in size from over 14 to 17 pounds. We then ran up to Wells Dam and got a few sockeye to round out our day. We entered the big fish I landed into the Hooked on Toys Derby that afternoon, and it took 4th place! I plan to take Shane and Audrey to dinner with the gift certificate I won. Fishing continues to be great, as more summer fish and sockeye make their way into our area.
