Originally I had planned to take a couple of my fishing buddies, Tom Bartlett and Jim Passage, to chase steelhead on the upper Columbia. I was going to fish in the Pateros area and then maybe Bridgeport. However, after being able to only catch a few steelhead at these locations so far this season, I decided to try Lake Chelan. I had heard of good rainbow trout fishing here and wanted to see for myself. We launched on the river section and started fishing right at the bridge. There were three anglers on the dock at Campbell’s and they were catching small rainbow. We tried out luck here and got some, too. I wanted bigger fish so we tried Rocky Point. Same thing. We caught rainbow but they were small. I then moved us up to Mill Bay. Here was also got small rainbow, but we did get one that was 19 inches. I know there are bigger rainbow in the lake, we just didn’t run into any. The next day Jim Passage and I floated the Methow for steelhead, and this was the highlight of my season.
