By Dave Graybill

Banks Lake is famous for good walleye fishing throughout the summer, and I gave it a try last weekend. There were reports of very good fishing over the 4th of July holiday weekend, and then as the very hot weather settled in the fish began moving around. I started my search just south of Steamboat Rock and immediately landed a nice 18 ½-inch keeper. I thought I was really in for a great day, with lots of good footage for my Fishing TV Show. Well, it turned out to be less than hot, but I did catch walleye at a couple of different spots along the west shore of the lake. One area was particularly good, producing a lot of hits. I missed a bunch of fish in a fairly tight spot off the shore in 20 to 30 feet of water, but I only managed to put one more keeper in the boat. I was surprised that I didn’t get any smallmouth bass while fishing my spinner and worm rigs. I did land a fat, 12-inch perch, and I threw that in the live well, too. Here’s a tip for anglers that like perch. Take a marker buoy along, and when you get a nice perch toss it out, and then go back and jig for more of them.
