If you’re still considering what to do the big opening weekend of trout fishing, you may want to make the trip to Potholes Reservoir and Mar Don Resort. The folks here have something very special planned. Every year they offer free dock fishing for a day at the resort and this year it will be Saturday, April 26th. In addition to free fishing, the Mesebergs have acquired 100 rods and reels and will be giving them away on Saturday, too. They also hope to release over 100,000 pen raised rainbow trout at the same time. Potholes would be a good destination for trout anglers. Warden Lake will open to fishing the same weekend. There should be fair fishing for trout that will average 13 inches, and some smaller fish that are the result of a fry plant last fall. The WDFW expects maybe five percent of the catch to be made up of carryover rainbow that will be 15 inches plus, and reminds anglers that there are some big brown trout in Warden Lake. There are some big trout available on Potholes, and the early spring bite for largemouth, smallmouth bass and walleye should be fairly decent on the big reservoir.
