By Dave Graybill

I have been running up to the dam in Tumwater Canyon to check on the sockeye return, and have been getting nothing but good news. Sockeye are now pouring over the dam and coming in really good numbers. It looks like we are going to have another sockeye season on Lake Wenatchee. It appears that the forecast for over 40,000 fish is coming true, and in fact the pit tag counts and downstream numbers indicate the return may be even larger than predicted. There will be an effort to start the season with an increased limit on sockeye, instead of the usual two per day. If you haven’t already I would get down to Hooked on Toys and stock up on sockeye gear. One rig that I had very good luck with last year was the one made my Macks Lure. It has a double hook tie, a pink hoochie and a Smile Blade, all ready to go. I caught fish at the Brewster Pool and on Lake Wenatchee with this one. Remember, if you plan on fishing for sockeye on Lake Wenatchee, plan to get there early. There is just one launch. Look for an announcement on the season very soon.
