By Dave Graybill

The Department of Fish and Wildlife has added another lake to the list that anglers can look forward to fishing in the winter time in Okanogan County. Leader Lake, which has been a favorite of opening weekend anglers for years, will now be open to fishing from January 1st through April 26th. The lake has an abundant supply of spiny ray species, along with rainbow trout. It has been proposed to make Leader Lake a year-round fishing lake and all the public comments gathered have been very favorable. The lake is just off Highway 20 and is a short drive from the town of Okanogan. Davis Lake, which is near Twisp, is another popular lake in the winter months. It is open from September 1st to March 31st to catch and keep fishing for rainbow, and is know for large fish, often taken through the ice. Patterson Lake, near Winthrop, is a year-round lake, but gets a lot of attention in the winter. It offers very good fishing through the ice for rainbow trout, and the perch here can average 10 inches some seasons. I hope to visit all the lakes mentioned this winter. I have had excellent ice fishing at Patterson.
