By Dave Graybill

I had a great afternoon recently, fishing above Wells Dam for king salmon. There are good numbers of these fish still making their way up river on the Columbia and the afternoon and evening fishing for them has been very good. I was fishing with my buddy Brian Anatatmula, with little success, until Shane Magnuson, Upper Columbia Guide Service, showed up. He immediately hooked two fish. He yelled over to put on a red Super Bait and a chrome flasher. I didn’t have a chrome flasher so went with the white and silver I had along and put the red Super Bait I already had rigged up on behind it. It did the trick, we soon hooked up, and Brian put a nice 12-pounder in the box. Not long after, we hooked up again. Brian said that this one was a very good fish, and it took off, burning line while I was clearing the riggers. Before we could do anything about it the fish ran under the debris piled up against the barrier above the dam and got tangled around something. We tried everything but couldn’t get it out of there. Oh, well. We had one fish in the box and a great one that got away story for our efforts.
