Warden’s Maxi Jig
Okay, I am way behind on the review of this one. I first started using the Maxi Jigs this past winter for steelhead. When these jigs were introduced everyone started using them, for good reason. I am sure that there are some very good technical reasons why these jigs work so well, but I am just going to tell you why I think they are great, from my own experience. First of all the coating is very tough. I have worn the paint of jigs and many chip easily. These hold up like nothing I have ever used before. The colors and patterns are bright and UV coated, too. The jigs have a clear hole to put your leader through. No more taking another jig and clearing it out so you can tie on a leader. This may not seem like much, but I really appreciate it. I also like the hooks. Not only do they use quality Owner hooks the style is perfect for hooking, whether you use bait or not. The hook gap is perfect. I was going to put off writing the review until just prior to the steelhead season next year, but I started using them for triploids on Rufus Woods and they love them! Something else I want to add. I was a dedicated bucktail jig user, because I use scent. These are marabou. I have found that steelhead and triploids attack these jigs without bait, and where it is allowed I can get away with the slightest amount of scent, without ruining the marabou feathers. These jigs have made me a believer in marabou. If you plan to fish for triploids this summer give these a try. I use the ¼ ounce due to the heavy currents on the Nespelem Bar, where I just dead drift them. If you are going to fish for steelhead on the rivers this fall and winter, be sure to have a selection in your box. You’re going to be impressed with how many fish you hook using them.
