You have read plenty of reports from me about the joy of bobber and jig or float fishing for steelhead on the upper Columbia River. You have probably attended seminars where local guides, like Shane Magnuson of Upper Columbia Guide Services, have talked about how successful they have been catching steelhead with this technique. If you haven’t gotten around to trying it yourself, here’s a handy guide on what to use and how to rig it. This is another in a series of Reports from Buzz Ramsey, who developed many of the techniques anglers are using today to catch steelhead on Northwest streams. If you
click here you will open a PDF that describes how to fish with a float, and if you
click here you will open a PDF that will describe the gear you will need to fish with this technique. I have to say that this will give you a jump start on learning how to catch steelhead in a way that accounts for the vast majority of steelhead taken on the upper Columbia River. I used to fish for steelhead in a variety of different ways, but now float fish for steelhead almost exclusively. It is not a difficult method to learn how rig or use. Like any other kind of fishing it may take a little practice, but you will be surprised how soon you will be confident in your ability to take steelhead while float fishing. Thanks to Buzz Ramsey for sharing his methods and telling us about all the great products to try.
