Berkley NanoFil Spinning Reel Line
This new spinning line from Berkley created quite a stir at the ICAST Show in Las Vegas this year. ICAST is the world’s largest sport fishing trade show and it’s where new products are introduced every year. This line won in the Best of Show category and in the Best Line category. Okay, that’s great, but what does it mean to me? Well, my favorite line for bobber fishing is no longer being made, so I am looking for an alternative, and this could be it. They stress that the line is not a braid and not monofilament. It is a “uni-filament”. The last line I was using for bobber fishing was a “micro-fuse” line. This new line is thin like braid, with zero stretch. It casts great and has little or no memory. It also floats. The big question was, since it has such a smooth surface, would a slip bobber knot hold? I did get to try this line out. I loaded a Pflueger President with the new line and took it triploid fishing below Chief Joseph Dam. It worked! It floated and mended nicely, and the knot worked great, too. I would recommend that you use a small diameter thread as knot material, the bulkier threads may not hold so well. Currently, the heaviest they make the NanoFil line is 12-pound test, which is pretty thin, and in “Clear Mist” white. If the line catches on it will be made in heavier test and even in high visibility colors. I sure hope so. It could be the ultimate bobber fishing line with these changes. So go out and get some and tell your guys at the sporting goods stores about making it heavier and in high vis and it may happen!
